Position Summary

The Corporate Communication team is part of the global Marketing Department, supporting all brand, reputation and profile-raising efforts of the firm. The team is specifically charged with firmwide oversight of public relations, content, internal and executive communications, brand and reputation, digital marketing (web, social, blogs, podcasts, content aggregation), creative services, and events; it is more than 20 strong and spread across the U.S. and the UK. The firm’s campaigns function also reports on a dotted line to the Corporate Communications team.

The Global Assistant Director of Corporate Communications will report to the Corporate Communications Director and will play a trusted leadership role in supporting and advancing all aspects of the Corporate Communications team. This will be supervisory role. The Associate Director will make a significant contribution to furthering the identity and reputation of Reed Smith in several ways, including:

  1. supporting the strategic development and execution of all brand and media-related aspects of the firm, such as helping to shape the firm's reputation in key markets, practices and industries;
  2. leading and supporting marketing campaigns, communications plans and other content creation efforts;
  3. advising on the execution and evolution of the firm’s digital channels and platforms;
  4. supporting the vendor management of outside agencies supporting PR, digital and creative services;
  5. enhancing project management and analytics tracking, all to streamline performance across the global function and measure the team’s effectiveness and the firm’s marketing impact; and
  6. providing counsel on communication matters.

This position will also collaborate closely with the other Marketing Department functions, such as Business Development, Regional Marketing, Client Relations and Marketing Technology, as well as firm leadership and practice and industry groups.

Successful candidates will have 10+ years of marketing and communications experience, preferably in the professional services industry, across several areas, such as: brand strategy and execution, public relations, digital content creation and distribution, creative services, internal communications, and marketing campaigns. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or related field and possess advanced writing and editing skills.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Director in providing trusted communication consulting to the Senior Management Team and Chiefs Team. Supports the Director in developing the strategy and direction of corporate storytelling internally and externally, ensuring that Reed Smith's Senior Management Team/Executive Committee are on board and able to concisely articulate the firm's strategy. Ensures a one-voice approach in all communications.
  • Assist in positioning, developing and strengthening Reed Smith's global brand as a firm that delivers the highest quality legal services across the firm's key industries. Work with practice and industry groups to understand their business and marketing strategies and translate them into media/brand strategies to promote the key strengths of practice groups, offices and individual attorneys.
  • Assist Director as spokesperson for Reed Smith globally and manage the firm's Public Relations team as well as PR agencies and consultant relationships.
  • Assists in directing the team to develop and implement impactful content for internal and external channels, ensuring alignment with the current firm strategy’s key areas of focus; assists in driving brand crisis communications if/when necessary.
  • Works closely with members of the Knowledge Management, Innovation and Client Value Team (pricing and project management) to devise strategies that raise the visibility of the firm's innovation in client service and thought leadership, and demonstrating the firm's desire to earn client trust and build strong client relationships.
  • Assists in developing plans for local corporate communications activity with the Directors and members of Regional Marketing teams.
  • Significantly contribute to the achievement of the marketing department's strategy and goals.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of marketing and communications experience, preferably in the professional services industry across several of the following areas: brand strategy and execution, public relations, digital content creation and distribution, creative services, internal communications, and marketing campaigns.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing or related field is required.
  • Possesses high degree of poise and professionalism when interacting with internal and external contacts.
  • Possesses proven oral and written communication skills with all levels of constituents that enable this professional to deftly deal with complex subject matter, has excellent project management skills, problem-solving, organizational, decision making and follow-up skills.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and follow through, with a committed, client-service orientation.
  • Has experience working collaboratively and effectively as part of a global team.
  • Has experience navigating a complex, multi­authority, multi-cultural business environment.
  • Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality and garner the trust and confidence of internal and external constituents.

Management & Leadership Skills

The ideal candidate will be able who demonstrates a high level of confidentiality, diplomacy and discretion due to the highly sensitive nature of much of this work and will act as Director in Director’s absence.

Additionally, we are seeking a motivated and motivational cross-department leader who delegates effectively and who can engage others (team, peers, and firm leaders) to participate in accomplishing goals for the firm.
