Job Summary

This position performs a variety of specialized tasks as assigned by supervisory attorneys including, but not limited to, summarizing legal documents, performing  records research, performing legal research, coordinating research, checking legal forms for accuracy, preparing reports and preparing correspondence.  The successful candidate also may be responsible for researching, writing and investigating legal matters for briefs or arguments.  

Typical Duties

Assists attorneys in trial preparation, legal research, client interview sessions, discovery conferences, investigation, witness preparation, drafting pre-trial and post-trial motions and motion hearings.

Researches and prepares legal memoranda in preparation for legal briefs.

Assists with e-filing documents with court system and/or administrative bodies.

May act as witness/prover in court for attorney to validate statements given during investigations.

May take written statements from clients and/or witnesses.

Assists with investigating facts and circumstances related to convictions found in background checks of candidates for employment.

Assists Real Estate Agent with filing tax exemptions and Certificates of Error.

Assists attorneys in drafting of contracts; and assist in contract signature process.

Assists with annual record retention filings, and department paper and electronic file organization.

Assists with utilizing legal database to track requests and responses.

  

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess a certificate of completion from an ABA-approved paralegal education program AND four (4) or more years of full-time work experience as a paralegal or substantially similar position.

OR

Must possess an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in paralegal studies, English, history, political science, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, business administration, public administration, accounting, or substantially similar area from an accredited college or university AND four (4) or more years of full-time work experience as a paralegal or substantially similar position.

OR

Must possess a high school diploma or GED or higher AND seven (7) or more years of full-time work experience as a paralegal or substantially similar position.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of at least one (1) season of work experience with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, OR at least one (1) season of work experience as a Conservation Corp Crew member, OR at least one (1) season of work experience on property of the Forest Preserves of Cook County with partners such as the Chicago Zoological Society, Chicago Botanic Garden, Greencorps Chicago, OR At least one (1) season of work experience with other partners such as, Friends of the Forest Preserves or the Student Conservation Association.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics

Excellent oral communication and writing skills.

Ability to clearly articulate through written documents concise analysis of assigned case material.

Ability to research and gather information from various sources.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of District information.

Ability to support multiple attorneys.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to use Word, Adobe, intranet systems, data management and matter tracking software.

Ability to work remotely, if necessary.

General District Employment Requirements

PROOF OF EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES WILL BE REQUIRED.

MUST BE A RESIDENT OF COOK COUNTY OR ESTABLISH RESIDENCY IN COOK COUNTY WITHIN SIX (6) MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT AND REMAIN A RESIDENT AT ALL TIMES DURING EMPLOYMENT WITH THE DISTRICT.

MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED AT THE TIME OF HIRE OR SUBMIT A REQUEST FOR A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION WITHIN ONE (1) WEEK OF START DATE.
